A Rich History
While the beginnings of the community can be traced back to the 1970 sale of the 4,236-acre ranch to Kaiser-Aetna, after which development of the community began, that sale was the newest and current chapter in McCormick Ranch’s rich history, which began in 1942.
The year Fowler and Anne McCormick bought the 21-year old Jolly ranch was one of rich uncertainty and filled with opportunity. The nation was ensconced in the midst of a World War. But opportunities abounded: Henry Ford patented the idea of using plastic for auto bodies. With many baseball players going to war, a young Jackie Robinson tried out with the Chicago White Sox, and begin training with the team. And Fowler McCormick, grandson of Nelson D. Rockefeller and heir to the legacy of Cyrus McCormick, the founder of International Harvester and agricultural revolutionary, had created an opportunity of his own.
With the purchase of the the Jolly Ranch, Fowler and Anne spent 12 years buying parcels around his own until a sprawling estate of thousands of acres had been created. And with that space, the McCormicks brought international fame to Scottsdale through Anne’s love for Arabian horses. Scottsdale gained international repute for breeding Arabian horses of the highest caliber, as well as Black Angus cattle.
